This one is for [info]kitty_tape. Although, just to be confusing, he uses the Ashkenazic rather than Modern Israeli pronunciation.

I was negligent about blogging my PAX experience last year. This year, I would like to avoid that, so before going to bed, I give you the highlights of my Friday at PAX 2009:

  • Played the Batman: Arkham Asylum demo. I couldn't even hear the dialogue, and it still convinced me it's time to break down and get an Xbox 360.

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle nostalgia tripping. The TMNT: Smash Up game was actually quite fun, to the extent I might even consider getting it, and I happily wore a TMNT: 25th anniversary pin around the rest of the day. Also, full size Turtle Bus!

  • I made an impulse buy of a sanely priced, used copy of Dragon Quest VIII, but I'm not sure I'll ever actually get around to playing it.

  • The following diaglouge during a discussion about cosplaying con-goers:

Dave: And there was someone dressed as an Earthbound character.
Me: Really? I don't remember seeing anything like that.
Dave: Yeah. Some one was dressed as Paula.
Me: Oh. Wow! That was Paula! She seems a lot less creepy now.

I saw her again latter, and she actually still seemed pretty creepy.

  • Race for the Galaxy is a fun table-top game.

  • I participated in the attempt to set a world-record for most DSs played simultaneously in a single gathering. I made sure Suikoden got representation.

  • I was sad to discover that Toho Studio lawyers finally set their guns on Seattle gaming fixture Pink Godzilla Games.

  • Mario Kart 64 is still the best of the Mario Kart games.

  • Skipped the Anamanaguchi concert as I wasn't very impressed with them last year. I was drafted into a game of Settlers outside the concert hall, and from what I could hear, they sounded better from the outside then they did from the inside.

  • Metroid Metal rocked. I would have personally preferred something less metal, and more prog, but they gave a great high energy performance. I was actually disappointed in the crowd. If I hadn't been carrying a giant swag bag at the time, I would have probably moved forward where the crowd was getting more into the music. In any case, I couldn't stand still. I plan to pick up their album tomorrow if I can. The line tonight was too long, and it was already very late.

All ye would be engineers of language, ye fight not a losing battle but a battle that is already lost

Language doesn't work that way.

The name is not the cause of the contempt; rather, the name takes on the contempt toward the named.

The main syntactic problem is to determine whether the fuck is being used as an [sic] pleonastic (semantically empty) direct object of shut or as a pre-head modifier of the preposition phrase (PP) headed by up... And I think we can — Geoff Pullum

This weekend is the Taste of Seattle. Who wants to go?

This being among among the many things I've been procrastinating or forgetting to post about. I'm really starting to think I should just break down and get a twitter account.

... and I haven't seen any one in a while.

Any of the local crowd want to go to a movie, celebrate the 2nd anniversary of Seattle's greatest store, or hang out in general this Saturday?

UPDATE:

I'm tentatively going to suggest Transformers at 1:05 pm at the Bellevue IMAX.

Also, I never realized there were three Ts in /tɛnətɪvli/!

Hearts cannot feel emotions

England[AP]- You do not feel with your heart horrible cold-hearted scientests announced yesterday, saying this to make up for their own inability to love.

The bad science men explained that the heart can only pump blood and if you feel sad or joyful that is your brain and not your heart. Whether tears come directly from the heart is still uncertain despite the meddling of these pathetic robot-like men who can feel nothing but jealously for normal people.

I hate these scientest men, I hate them with my heart.

My undergraduate advisor told me she'd never taken a databases course that wasn't horrifically boring. I have no reason to doubt her, and my own experience concurs that the subject is intrinsically soporific.

But still, we shall see...

For a while now I've heard very good things about the feature-length, mythological, autobiographical, animated, musical, one-woman production Sita Sings the Blues. It hasn't seen release due to copy right restrictions on the songs, but it's now available online. I finally watched it and it deserves all the praise it's getting.

If you have some free time to spare, you should definitely watch it.

That people are always declared to be irrational because they fail to act according to some model of rationality? It's never the model that's at fault, is it?

Anybody else using it and finding that it hangs constantly?

UPDATE: 'Twas Flash's fault. But the fix was ridiculously elaborate. It required a complete uninstall/reinstall of Flash, repairing disk permissions, and resetting Safari!

Once again the secret to enjoying things turns out to be low expectations. I saw Watchmen expecting to be able to denounce it as an abomination legitimately. I wanted to hate it, but I couldn't. Yes, it was a shallow copy of a very deep book, but it was a highly entertaining shallow copy.

My top sites according to Safari 4 on first launch:

1. Kingdom of Loathing
2. Google
3. Google Reader
4. Kingdom of Loathing
5. Kingdom of Loathing
6. Penny Arcade
7. Shlock Mercenary
8. My LJ Friends Page
9. Sluggy Freelance
10. Foxtrot
11. Elf Life
12. Real Life Comics

If there were justice in this world (and I wasn't too lazy to delete stuff from my book marks), Sluggy Freelance would be replaced by Scary-Go-Round (if the pattern I discern is correct).

I saw Coraline this afternoon. I thought John Hodgman's singing voice sounded suspiciously like John Linnell, and the credits confirmed my suspicions.
